Test Run Completed and Successful

On Sunday 9 February 2020 the ICE1 220m Track Test Run was conducted under International Skating Union (ISU) Supervision in Thialf Ice Stadium Heerenveen the Netherlands. The Test Run is an ISU requirement to ensure

the health and safety of Skaters participating in an event with a proposed novelty.
 

• The size and shape of the ICE1 220m in Thialf is 100% compliant to the ISU Speed Skating Rules.

 

• All the conduct of the ICE1 Races is straight from the ISU's own rule books with some very minor exceptions agreed to by the ISU and adapted to the ICE1 race program to further ensure the health and safety of the participating skaters considering the 220m ICE1 Track and positioning of the moveable padding in Thialf.

• The boarding/padding complied with specifications of the moveable padding in ISU Communication 2128 Short Track Speed Skating padding.

• Medical coverage exceeded what the International Skating Union Communication No. 2267 On Ice Medical Emergencies Protocol requires.

• Flying 1 Lap Time Trials were successfully run.

• 3 Lap Mass Start races with a standing start were successfully run.

• 5 Lap Mass Start races with a neutral 1 lap rolling start were successfully run.

• 7 Lap Mass Start races with a neutral 1 lap rolling start were successfully run in an International Skating Union sanctioned Speed Skating Mass Start Race per ISU Rules and any and all International Skating Union Communications pertaining to Speed Skating Mass Start Races.

 

ICE1 would like to thank all that were involved in making this ISU Required Test Run a successful reality.

 

• Thialf Ice Stadium and its Board of Directors, the operations Thialf Team, and the Thialf Team expertly preparing the ICE1 220m Track

• The ISU, the ISU Observation/Supervisory Team and representative of the ISU Development Commission in attendance

• The KNSB for allowing their International Referees and Starter to participate

• Etiming for the electronic timing and race administration

• SBC video capture

• The Referees and Starters

• Sidijk for their boarding expertise

• The Boarding Boyz and Block Chasers

• All the volunteers helping in everything from A-Z

But the biggest thanks and appreciation goes to all the skaters as they skated earnestly and with full effort

to demonstrate that Flying One Lap Time Trials and Mass Start Racing on the ICE1 220m Track in Thialf

does not put their health and safety in jeopardy.

Icederby - Information to ISU Members:

“The ISU herewith informs its Members that based on recent contacts with the company Icederby Europe, the ISU in principle has agreed that Icederby conducts a Test Run for 1 Lap Time Trials and Mass Start Skating Races on the 220 meters track at the Thialf arena in Heerenveen on September 7, 2019.

This Test Run has the sole objective to review and ensure the health and safety of Skaters for this type of novelty format competitions. The Test Run will in no way be an actual competition. Icederby agreed that no results/rankings shall be recorded and published and no commercial activity (ticket sales, media coverage, marketing, prize money payments) shall take place.

The ISU is currently in contact with Icederby in order to clarify a number of technical issues related to the Test Run. Icederby will publish all relevant details of the above-mentioned Test Run @ http://www.ICE1.net as soon all technical issues are clarified.

Icederby has furthermore informed the ISU that they plan to hold an actual Mass Start International Competition on the 220meters track at Thialf in March 2020 (called "2020 ICE 1 Netherlands") which will be subject to ISU approval as per ISU Communication 2171.

Once the ISU is in a position to approve the planned March 2020 Icederby International Competition, it will be included in the ISU Event Calendar posted on the ISU website."

CONDUCT OF THE RACES

The Test Run ICE1 Mass Start Speed Skating Races on the 220m ICE1 Track with 16m corner radius will be conducted respecting the following ISU Documents.

  • checkThe ISU Constitution and General Regulations 2018

  • checkApplicable parts of The ISU Special Regulations & Technical Rules Speed Skating 2018

  • checkApplicable parts of The ISU Special Regulations & Technical Rules Short Track Speed Skating 2018

Races will be conducted based on the ISU Speed Skating Technical Rules for Mass Start Races in Speed Skating (Rule 253, paragraph 4) but with some exceptions, agreed to by the ISU, adapted to the race program and to further ensure the health and safety of the participating skaters considering the 220m ICE1 Track and positioning of the moveable padding in Thialf. The padding complies with the specifications of moveable padding in ISU Communication 2128 Short Track Speed Skating padding. All races of the Test Run will be conducted under ISU Supervision.

RACES and DISTANCES

Flying 1 Lap Time Trial (220m) for seeding
5 Lap Mass Start Race
3 Lap Mass Start Race
7 Lap Mass Start Race
Note: There will not be any intermediate sprints in the above Mass Start Races

Starting procedures for the 5 Lap Mass Start and & 7 Lap Mass Start will be conducted with a “Neutral first lap”/Rolling Start per ISU Rule 253 4. b) (ii) (iii)

Starting procedures for the 3 Lap Mass Start Race will be conducted with a “standing start” per ISU Rule 298 Starting Procedures paragraphs 4 through 13.

The official start and finish line on the 220m ICE1 Track in Thialf for the Flying 1 Lap Time Trial and for all distances of the Mass Start Races is dead center on the finishing straight.

RANKING LISTS, SEEDING, MAKE UP OF RACES

Flying 1 Lap Time Trials with electronic timing will be held on the 220m ICE1 Track to determine the ranking for the seeding of the Test Run 5 Lap Mass Start Races.

The Flying 1 Lap Time Trial will be conducted in the following manner. Note: the start list will be randomly drawn from the Skaters who have entered the Flying 1 Lap and will be posted in the Skaters area in the infield of the 220m ICE1 Track, given to the Referee, Starter and other appropriate Officials –

A. The Flying 1 Lap Time Trial is held one skater at a time.

B. The start and finish line for the Flying 1 Lap Time Trial is the same line as explained above, dead center in the finishing straight of the 220m Icederby Track.

C. When the Starter blows the whistle, the next Skater to be timed for a Flying 1 Lap lines up at the 220m ICE1 Track Start/Finish Line.

D. Once the skater is settled and motions to the starter, then the Starter shoots the gun.

E. The Skater then has 1 Lap (220m) to build speed.

F. The timing for the Flying 1 Lap begins when the Skater crosses the Start/Finish Line for the completion of the first lap.

G. The timing for the Flying 1 Lap ends when the skater crosses the Start/Finish Line at the completion of the second lap.

There will be a separate general rank order Flying 1 Lap Classification for each gender.

This Flying 1 Lap Classification will be used to create two different ranking lists for each gender-
One for Clap Skates (CS) in rank order of CS finishes from the Flying 1 Lap Classification
One for Fixed Blades (FB) in rank order of FB finishes from the Flying 1 Lap Classification

 

Based upon the two ranking lists above of the electronically timed Flying 1 Lap Time Trials the 5 Lap Mass Start Races will be seeded in the following fashion-

 

Seeding by Time Trial Ranking for the 5 Lap Mass Start Races

For each gender a 5 Lap Distance Classification (5 Lap DC), based solely on the finishing times of the skaters in the 5 Lap Mass Start Races, will be created. This 5 Lap Distance Classification will be used to create two different ranking lists -
One for Clap Skates (CS) in rank order of CS finishes from the 5 Lap DC
One for Fixed Blades (FB) in rank order of FB finishes from the 5 Lap DC​

Based upon the Clap Skate 5 Lap DC and the Fixed Blade 5 Lap DC

the 3 Lap Races will be seeded in the following fashion-

 

Seeding by Time Trial Ranking for the 3 Lap Mass Start Races

For each gender a 3 Lap Distance Classification (3 Lap DC), based solely on the finishing times of the skaters in the 3 Lap Mass Start Races, will be created. This 3 Lap Distance Classification will be used to create two different ranking lists -
One for Clap Skates (CS) in rank order of CS finishes from the 3 Lap DC
One for Fixed Blades (FB) in rank order of FB finishes from the 3 Lap DC

Based upon the Clap Skate 3 Lap DC and the Fixed Blade 3 Lap DC

the 7 Lap Races will be seeded in the following fashion-
